Understanding Gear Ratios: A Practical Guide for Makers
Gears are fundamental to mechanical design. Our practical guide explains gear ratios with real examples and hands-on experiments.

The Magic of Gears
Gears are among humanity's most important inventions. They transmit power, change speed, reverse direction, and multiply force. Understanding gear ratios unlocks the ability to design and build mechanical systems.
What Is a Gear Ratio?
A gear ratio describes the relationship between two meshing gears. If a 20-tooth gear drives a 10-tooth gear, the ratio is 2:1 - the smaller gear spins twice for every rotation of the larger gear.
Speed vs Torque
Speed Multiplication: When a small gear drives a large gear, you get more speed but less torque. Think of a bicycle in high gear - pedals spin fast but each push is weak.
Torque Multiplication: When a large gear drives a small gear, you get more torque but less speed. Think of a bicycle in low gear - pedals spin easily but the wheel turns slowly.
Calculating Gear Ratios
For two gears: Ratio = Teeth on driven gear / Teeth on driving gear
For multiple gears (gear trains): Multiply the ratios of each stage.
Hands-On Experiments
The best way to understand gears is to build with them. Here are experiments that demonstrate key concepts:
Experiment 1: Build a simple 2:1 ratio and count rotations. Verify the math.
Experiment 2: Build a compound gear train. Calculate the overall ratio, then test it.
Experiment 3: Feel the torque difference by trying to stop each gear train with your fingers.
Real-World Applications
Gear ratios are everywhere: bicycles, cars, clocks, power tools, and industrial machinery. Understanding them helps you see the mechanical world with new eyes.
